My Story
After noticing bumps popping up on Nick’s neck, starting about 6 weeks ago, he began going through a series of tests. Nick was diagnosed  today, Nov. 1, 2019 with leukemia and T cell lymphoblastic lymphoma, essentially cancer in his blood and bone marrow.  Nick’s oncologist, Dr. Stuart Gold, describes his diagnosis as “Treatable and Cureable.”

Five Years Later: No IVs, Just GPAs

May 20, 2025 marked Nick’s 5th ReBirthday. We wanted to share one final update for all of you who walked this road with us, cheered us on, and sent love from near and far.

Spoiler: It’s all amazing news!

From a medical perspective, Nick is nothing short of a miracle. He remains in full remission, with only minor side effects from his bone marrow transplant. Meeting him today, you’d never guess what he endured. His beloved Dr. Gold has since retired, but we still enjoy seeing him each year at the Reelin’ for Research fundraiser. Best of all—Nick’s check-ups are now down to just once a year.

Life!

At 19, Nick is thriving. This morning he headed back to Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo to begin his sophomore year as a computer engineering major. He did wonderfully in his first year and loves being back in California.

In August we marked Nick’s 5th ReBirthday with a two-week adventure in Bariloche, Argentina—thanks to the generosity of Make-A-Wish. The plan had been to ski Argentina’s best mountain, but in a rare twist for that time of year, there was no snow! We managed a few beginner runs just to say we did, then pivoted to “Plan B”: hiking, tram rides up mountain peaks, and soaking in jaw-dropping views. Bariloche felt like Lake Tahoe—only with seven lakes instead of one.

Food was another part of Nick’s wish, and Argentina delivered. Steak, trout, Malbec, and chocolate became our daily staples. Nick even cooked us dinner one night over a wood-fired grill at our Airbnb. Between food trucks, yerba mate, and local artisan shops, we soaked in every moment. (Sam officially won the “best Spanish vocabulary” award for the trip!)

Once again, thank you all for the love and encouragement you’ve shown over the years. Your prayers, words, and support carried us during the hardest days and helped us celebrate the best ones.

Watching Nick step fully into adulthood fills us with tears of joy—grateful that he is here, healthy, and ready to embrace all life has to offer.

Cheers to Nick!

April 3, 2023 – A Message From Nick
On the weekend of May 5th I will be participating in a fundraiser called Reeling for Research. The money donated towards the fundraiser will be put towards childhood cancer research at the UNC hospital. When I was 13 I was diagnosed with Leukemia and this hospital helped save my life. The link below leads to my personal fundraising page, where you can make a tax deductible donation towards childhood cancer research. Thank you for your consideration and have a great day!

2 years post diagnosis.

Nick finally gets to trick or treat in his 2 year old hot dog costume with his friends! This plan was a long time coming to fruition. So grateful this journey feels like it’s ended and this picture marks a full circle completed. Nick is enjoying being back in school as a sophomore in high school. What a joy it is to watch him grow, laugh and love.
Cheers everyone. I hope this makes you smile like it does me.

“Oh I wish I was an Oscar Meyer Weiner. That is what I truly want to be-ee-ee.
Cause if I was an Oscar Meyer Weiner … everyone would be in love with me!”

Celebrating Health and Life!

Day +365 Post BMT
Nick’s First Re-Birthday <3
Today marks one year since they put Sam’s immune system into Nick’s body. I am happy to report that by all accounts it has been a resounding success. Thinking back to where we were a year ago feels surreal. Did it really all happen?! We dreamed of a trip in the future to Colorado to mark this auspicious occasion and would discuss all the different things we would do on this trip.
Read on for the reality…
We arrived in Colorado on Mother’s Day and went to Fort Collins where Sam was about to start her finals week at CSU. After lots of rain and SNOW it was time to meet all of Sam’s friends and see our family members who live in CO. Nick got up everyday to start school at 5:25AM and Eric finished up work and it was time to really start our vacation!! We took a day trip to Estes Park and then headed off to the biggest part of the celebratory adventure…
Steamboat Springs! It has not disappointed us. Our friend’s, The Heitmann’s, arrived to help us whoop it up. We’ve hit the Hot Springs, ridden bikes, hiked to Fish Creek Falls and yesterday we went on a hot air balloon ride. Despite being afraid of heights, Nick continued to show his bravery and smiled all the way up to 10,000 feet above sea level! I shed a tear while peering over the side of the basket watching the Yampa River absorb the creek running into it as I thought about how a year ago (while on the ground) Sam’s immune system absorbed Nick’s and made it possible for us to be in a basket high in the sky breathing in the fresh mountain air. The two alternate universes were not lost on me.
Today, the official Re-Birthday, brought an
unexpected surprise. We saw not one, but two brown bears. Our  big adventure planned for the day was going white water rafting on the Elk River. No one fell off the boat and we all thoroughly enjoyed navigating the rapids (and we were all very grateful for the wetsuits too.)
So here we are. I feel as if a chapter in our life is closing. Nick is healthy and ready to move past “cancer.” I’m not sure I’ll ever be done fully processing this major life event but I am sure I will never, ever stop being grateful for all the family and friends in our lives.
I am forever changed. Life is precious. Appreciate it. Live every moment to the fullest. Love and laugh as often as possible.
THE END!
